A catalytic converter that fails usually does so due to blockage or from what is known as poisoning, this is caused by some fuel types which include additives being used that over time can shorten the cat's life.

If your converter is blocked most vehicles will cut out due to the back pressure. Without an inspection point in catalytic converters there is no way for you to check to see if your unit is clogged without removing it and checking the performance.

Old front pipes can be found with rust and corrosion and that means that the debris that is knocked off during performance and escape into the new cat and cause damage.
